Dragon Phoenix Theatre & Common Ground

Hong Kong Re-imagining the beauty of old Hong Kong artistic design

As co-organizer of the “Dragon Phoenix Theatre & Common Ground” Intergenerational Mid-Autumn Festival Tea Gathering and Gaming Experience, The Project Futurus partnered with the Hong Kong Arts Centre to celebrate heritage and foster cross-generational connections in Tai Kok Tsui. Curated by Community Interaction Planner Kay Chan Wan Ki, the event welcomed over 130 participants, including elders, youth, local organisations, and residents.

In preparation for the event, students from The Church of Christ in China Ming Kei College participated in a softmeal workshop led by The Project Futurus, where they learned about inclusive dining and the importance of catering to elders with swallowing difficulties. This hands-on experience deepened their understanding of age-friendly practices and equipped them to support the event meaningfully.

On the event day, The Project Futurus invited 30 elderly individuals with swallowing challenges, along with their family members from nearby neighbourhoods. Specially prepared softmeals were served, ensuring that all guests could enjoy festive refreshments safely and comfortably.

The venue was transformed into a nostalgic reimagining of the Dragon Phoenix Theatre and traditional “dai tat dei” (open-air bazaar). Students took on roles such as ushers, theatre staff, hawkers, and stall assistants. To enhance the cultural atmosphere, local artist Cammie Chan generously loaned traditional Qi Pao dresses for the student volunteers, adding elegance and authenticity to the experience.

The event featured themed booths, interactive games, and oral histories shared by local residents, offering a rich tapestry of Tai Kok Tsui’s cultural evolution. Through thoughtful design and storytelling, the initiative revived the district’s historical ambiance and strengthened intergenerational bonds.

The Project Futurus is honoured to have co-created this inclusive and meaningful celebration, reaffirming its commitment to building age-friendly communities through art, design, and shared cultural narratives.
