Pillow Tales & Dim Sum Trails
A special handcrafted "Sensory Cushions" for elders with dementia in collaboration with Rhys & J.CREW
In partnership with Rhys, The Project Futurus co-created the "Pillow Tales & Dim Sum Trails"program for individuals living with dementia. The initiative encompasses the inclusive design and handcrafting of "Sensory Cushions," as well as the delivery of the Sensory Restaurant on Wheels™ experience in care homes. Aimed at fostering community co-creation, the program brings together corporate volunteers, underprivileged women, and individuals of diverse abilities. After completing the cushions, the volunteers transform into restaurant waiters, offering an immersive dining experience for elderly participants with dementia. Each participant also receives a Sensory Cushion as a heartfelt gift, bringing warmth, connection, and comfort.
Among dementia individuals, "busy hands" which is characterized by restlessness, is an extremely common behaviour. This behaviour often stems from anxiety, agitation, or a need for sensory stimulation as cognitive abilities decline. Sensory stimulation tools such as fidget blankets, textured objects, and activity boards, provide a safe and meaningful way to address "busy hands." These items engage the senses to reduce agitation, promote focus, and foster a sense of calm.
As a result, embedded within the "Sensory Cushion" are elements that reduce anxiety, address "busy hands", and trigger nostalgic memories of traditional dim sum dining. Elements to play with include textured objects with dim sum motifs, snap fasteners, and velcro tapes. The most signature element is the traditional dim sum stamp card on cushion and the stamp pendant.
